WELCOME!

Hello and welcome to
our web page. We are Year 1 and our teacher is Miss Wanless. There are 18
children in our class. Some of us are 5 and some of us are 6. We have 11 girls
and 7 boys and we are all very good friends. Our classroom is the one with a
number 4 on the front. Why don’t you come in to find out more about us!

We have a classroom
code that we all try to follow. This helps us to be kind, caring people and
also makes our classroom a warm and friendly place to be. Here are some of the
things that we always try to do.
Put our hands up to
speak and listen to what other people say.

Share things.

Treat other people
the way they would like us to treat them.

Always try our best.

To give us more
responsibility, we also have a rota for our classroom helpers. Every day, 2
people are in charge of taking the register, giving out exercise books, and
doing any other jobs Miss Wanless needs us to do. It is such a special job that
as a treat, we get to sit on the big comfy beanbag in our reading corner!

One of our most important jobs as classroom helpers is
to feed our class pets. We have two goldfish and it is up to us to feed them
every morning when we come to school. Their names are Cheese and Onion. Can you
guess why?
We are all making
excellent progress with our reading. We follow the Ginn reading scheme at home,
and used the Oxford Reading Tree books for our Guided reading. We also enjoy
spending the first part of our morning reading independently or with a friend.
We have lots of lovely shelf books to choose from. Sometimes we try to read the
words and other times, we like to tell the story by looking at the pictures.
Our reading corner is very comfortable because we have carpet. There are also
cushions and chairs for people who have been extra good to sit in!

We really enjoy doing
shared reading and writing. This half-term we have been looking at non-fiction.
We can find the title, author, contents and index pages without any help. We
are also developing beautiful handwriting and are getting better at remembering
our capital letters and full stops.

Our numeracy lessons are always fun because
we get to do lots of practical activities. We have just had an interactive
whiteboard put on our wall and we love to use it. It has a magic pen and we can
use it to move shapes and numbers from one part of the board to another. We are
becoming super mathematicians. We can nearly all count to 100 in ones, fives
and tens, we know the names of most 2D and 3D shapes, and we are beginning to
get to grips with buying and giving change using coins up to 20p.

We have a lovely IT
suite with brand new computers in and we get to do work in there every Tuesday
afternoon. We are becoming a lot more confident at word processing simple
sentences, and like to change the colour and font of our writing. We also enjoy
using art packages and various CD Roms. As well as in the IT suite, IT is
incorporated in to our classroom based lessons too. The interactive whiteboard
is frequently used, especially for Easiteach maths and to find information on
the Internet.

When we are not all busy doing the same work, we get to have free choice time. There are lots of different areas we can use and activities we can do. These include a role play area, computer, a listening table, construction, numeracy and literacy-based games, free access to art materials and a sand pit. Even though we all have a favourite, we are encouraged to vary our choices so that we continue to develop the skills we acquired in reception.

various areas with captions)
We are also good at
role play, as we get lots of practice in our role-play corner. Here we are
doing our assembly on Caring, and playing in our Funfair.
Last term, we had two
trips. The first was to the Stadium of Light, where we got to try on the
Sunderland strips and do exercises with a football coach. The second was to
Bede’s world, where we did Christmas activities and learnt about what life was
like for Monks.
